We're Like Legal Pirates - Tribeka Powers Microsoft Retail Software Sales
I like the approach that Microsoft is taking to selling software in their new stores, It's almost like a walk-in Amazon.com. As described in the CNET News.com article (link below)...
"Microsoft has taken an interesting approach to selling PC software--the category it is best known for. Although Microsoft stocks dozens of software products on its back shelves, hundreds more titles are available on-demand. Customers can browse on a touch screen through the various options and once they select a product, it can be burned to disc in the back of the store, complete with a professional-looking disc label, DVD case, and manual."
While there are a lot of similarities between the Apple and Microsoft stores, I think that Microsoft distinguishes themselves in key ways, from this on-demand approach to software distribution, to the embedded, interactive video wall that wraps around the entire space (as seen in the cool, but lengthy video below).
The space is well designed, open and bright. The seamless glass walls at the front make it feel really approachable.
I, for one, welcome the competition in retail, mall presence that this represents for the Apple store.
